Dear Parents and Families,
I am so pleased to have each of your students in my class this year! Our classroom will be a community of learners, working together to help each other be successful. I hope that you will feel welcome to schedule a visit with us to observe or to volunteer.
How can you help us out? I'm so glad you asked! We always welcome volunteers who can read to students or let students read to them. If you have a special skill you would like to share with our students (arts, crafts, vocational, etc.), please schedule a time with us--we are always ready to learn something new! Our class is made up of a diverse group of students with rich cultural backgrounds, and we welcome families to schedule a time to share stories, recipes, and the history of their culture and heritage.
Please take some time to explore our website/blog. The main page will contain the current newsletter, as well as current announcements and events such as family nights (held during each nine-week term). On the left-hand side of the page, you will notice links to each page within the site. Through these links, you will learn about our classroom mission, covenant, goals, and expectations. You will also see a page called "Homework and Projects." Here is where you will find what assignments your child is current working on. There is also a section for Student Blog Entries. Here you will find links to student-written articles, stories, opinions, etc. Students are often more interested in writing when they have a place to show off all their hard work!
Next, you will find a section called "Class Meeting Agenda." Students may use this area to post issues, concerns, or suggestions to be considered during the next class meeting. You will also notice a section titled "Service Projects." We want to be good citizens, not only of our school, but also of our community. Here you will find the current community service project that we are working on. These projects may include a canned food drive, a recycling drive, volunteering for a local retirement home, etc. When we help others, we grow as responsible citizens!
Finally, you'll see the "Contact Ms. Gurley" page. Here you will find the phone number and email address at which you may reach me. You will also see that students have several ways to contact me, as well. I believe that by having several lines of communication, both students and families will be more willing to reach out for help when they need it! Please stay in touch and let me know if there are circumstances which may affect your student's well-being or performance at school. I am here to help your student succeed, and will make every effort to assist you in that endeavor as well.
Closer to the bottom of the page, you will find a series of links under the heading "Topics." This is to help you locate specific information you may be looking for regarding activities, EOGs, newsletters, etc. If you look above the "Pages" links, you'll also notice a search bar which you can use to locate specific information, as well.
I look forward to working closely with each of you this year. Together we can help your students become successful, responsible citizens and life-long learners!
Sincerely,
Ms. Karen Gurley
